EuroGamezWelcome to the tutorial for *Railways of the World*!
In this game the players are railway barons trying to expand their companies by laying down track and purchasing newer and better trains.
[tip] Please note that this game takes up a lot of 'Table Space' sometimes you might need to scroll down to find this *Tutorial Window* [tip]1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
EuroGamezThe aim of the game is to have the most *points* by the end of the game. Players get points by transporting *goods*, completing *Major Lines* and achieving their hidden goal *Railroad Baron* card.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
EuroGamezThe game is played over a number of *rounds*, each *round* every players takes three *actions* in turn order.
Each *round* starts with an *auction* to determine the turn order for that round.
After each player has taken three *actions* the *round* ends with an *income phase* where players collect money and pay their shareholders.3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
EuroGamezLet's take a look at the screen and familiarise ourselves with the different game components.4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
EuroGamezThis is the main map.
There are several different maps you can play on. Each one has some differences and special rules.
We will use the *Mexico* map for this tutorial which has no special rules and clearly highlights all the things you will need to know to get started.5MEX_17_15_Wrapper000
EuroGamezBelow the main map you will find the *income track*:
This tracks your income, the number on the track preceded by a $-sign. And your current *score*, the number in the red circle.
[tip] Note that on some maps this track will not be on a separate board but on the main map [tip]6board_score_track000
EuroGamezAlso below the *map* you will see the pool of available *cards*.7board_operation_cards_b_item_21000
EuroGamezAnd finally, below all of that you will see players’ hands of *cards* and locomotive *engines*.8rotw_playertable_91959965_wrap000
EuroGamezIn the column to the right you will also find a summary of all the players’ information.9avatar_92251866000
EuroGamezThe most important information you will need to keep an eye on here is:10playerCounters91959965000mb_money91959965 1

EuroGamezThis little locomotive shows who is the current starting player.16turnMarker_92251866000turnMarker_92251866 2
EuroGamezThis is also visible on the map's turn-order track.17turnOrder000turnOrder 2
EuroGamezOkay now that you have a basic overview or the game let's jump in and start playing! :)18archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000
EuroGamezBefore the game starts you will be given two *Railroad Baron* cards, this is one of the three ways to get points in the game.
You will choose one of them and discard the other. At the end of the game you will get the points indicated on the card if you fulfilled its criteria.19rotw_player_rail_baron_cards_91959965_item_9000rotw_player_rail_baron_cards_91959965 1
EuroGamezLet's choose *Manuel Gonzales* by clicking it and then selecting *Keep* in the top menu.20rotw_player_rail_baron_cards_91959965_item_9010railbaron_keep 1
EuroGamezThen select *Keep* on the top menu to confirm.21railbaron_keep010railbaron_keep 1
EuroGamezWhen everyone has chosen a *Railroad Baron* card the game starts with the first initial *auction* for turn order.
The auction starts with the current start player and proceeds clockwise until there is only one player left.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment621cd8d53147200
EuroGamezOn your turn in the auction you can either *bid* any amount higher than the current bid or *pass*.
If you *pass* you are out of the auction and can't rejoin later.2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment621cd8d53147200
EuroGamezThe opponent has opened the *auction* with a bid of *1*.
The bid for turn order in an important part of the strategy of the game. But let's worry about that after we've learned the rules!1bid_92251866621cd8f58c60e00
EuroGamezFor now let's just outbid the opponent once, then pass out of the auction.
Click the *+* to increase your bid to *2* then *Make Bid*.2bid_plus621cd8f58c60e10bid_plus 1
EuroGamezThe opponent has bid *3*.
let's *Pass*.1bid_pass621cd8fe3d69110bid_pass 1
EuroGamezOnly the player that has *won* the auction *pays* their bid. All other players pay nothing.
You might have noticed at this point that we don't actually have any *money* with which to bid.1playerCounters92251866621cd8ffb47bb00
EuroGamezIn this game you can never run out of money so anytime you would need to *spend money*, and don't have any on hand you will automatically issue *bonds* to get enough money to pay for your actions.
You cannot issue *bonds* if you don't actually need to spend the money.
Each *bond* you issue gives you *5K* money.2overall_player_board_92251866621cd8ffb47bb00
EuroGamezWe can see here that the opponent won the auction with a bid of *3*, they now have *2K* money left and *1 bond*.
Since we didn't win the auction we don't pay anything. We still have no cash, also no Bonds.3playerCounters92251866621cd8ffb47bb00playerCounters92251866 1
EuroGamezOn your turn you can do one of 5 *actions*:
[blue]Build track, Improve Engine, Choose a card, Urbanize a city[/blue] and [blue]Deliver a Good[/blue].
You can also choose to *Pass*, but if you do you are completely out of the round, you would almost never do this.4archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment621cd8ffb47bb00
EuroGamezLet's look at the *Build track* action first.
We can see here that the opponent has used their first action to build track between *Veracruz* and *Salina Cruz*.
1MEX_28_26_Wrapper621cd9271a93d00
EuroGamezLet's also start by building some track!1MEX_29_13_Wrapper621cd9463f75500
EuroGamezTo build track we select a *hex* next to any *city* and click it.
You can change the type of track tile by clicking the same hex again and clicking the *spin* button.
There are *bends* and *straight* and also some *intersecting* track.
!!! Note that in this tutorial the track will be built automatically !!!2MEX_29_13_Wrapper621cd9463f75500
EuroGamezWhen you build track you are trying to connect two cities. Each city has a number of *entrances/exits* that are shown by the short segment of track on that hex. 1MEX_28_10_Wrapper621cd9585202e00
EuroGamezWhen you build track you can only build up to *4 tiles* during one action. So sometimes you will need more than 1 action to finish your link.
Even if your track connects two cities with fewer than 4 tiles, you cannot use the remainder to build more.2MEX_29_13_Wrapper621cd9585202e00
EuroGamezWe have now started connecting *San Antonio* and *Brownsville*.3MEX_29_13_Wrapper621cd9585202e00
EuroGamezAnother action you can take is to *Deliver Goods*. This is the main way to gain *points* in the game.
Let's see the opponent deliver a *Purple Cube* from *Veracruz* to *Salina Cruz*.1fakeCube621cd95da57c800
EuroGamezNow let's complete our link from *San Antonio* to *Brownsville*.1MEX_29_13_Wrapper621cd960f11fb00
EuroGamezYou can continue building on a track that you started on a previous action.
!!! But beware, if the track does *not* complete a link between two cities at the end of the *round* (3rd action). All those track tiles will be removed. !!!2MEX_29_13_Wrapper621cd960f11fb00
EuroGamezThe cost to build track depends on the *terrain* you build on:
Open terrain ([green]green[/green] hex): 2K
Water/Rivers ([blue]water[/blue] droplet): 3K
Mountains (*grey* dot): 4K
Crossing a mountain ridge (thick [red]red[/red] line): +4K3MEX_29_13_Wrapper621cd960f11fb00
EuroGamezWhen you confirm the track build you will automatically *pay* for the track and issue any *bonds* to do so.
One of your *locomotives* will be placed on the track to show who owns it.1MEX_29_13_Wrapper621cd96db25c600
EuroGamezOn their last *action* the opponent will chose to take one of the available *cards*.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment621cd970cdcdd00
EuroGamezNow it's our last *action*, let's deliver a [blue]blue[/blue] cube from *San Antonio* to *Brownsville*.
Select the *Deliver Good* from the top menu, then the cube you want to deliver.
Then click the arrow to start the delivery.1button_deliverGood621cd97acd88a10button_deliverGood 1
EuroGamez*Delivering Goods* is the main way to gain points in the game.
Goods (cubes) come in 5 different colours. The colour of the cube indicates to what colour city it wants to be delivered to.
Let's deliver this [blue]blue[/blue] cube to *Brownsville*.1cube_21621cd97f4d6a610
EuroGamezOnce the cube reaches a city with a *matching colour* the delivery will end and we will *score points* for the delivery.1MEX_29_13_Wrapper621cd9826446d00
EuroGamezHow far a cube can be delivered depends on the level of your *engine*. Each player starts the game with a Level 1 engine. This mean that a cube can only be moved across a single link connecting two cities.
Once we have *upgraded* our engine we can chain links to transport cubes across several linked tracks.2player_passenger_lines91959965621cd9826446d00mb_completed_links91959965 1
EuroGamezWhen we *deliver a cube* we score 1 point on the income track *for each link* the cube travelled. So this delivery gained us one step on the income track. 3player_passenger_lines91959965621cd9826446d00overall_player_board_91959965 1
EuroGamezYou will also be able to score *additional points* on the income track by completing *Bounties*.
These are cards in the card pool with a [green]Green[/green] Dot on the bottom right.
These cards are automatically awarded to the player fulfilling them, then discarded.
[tip] Cities with Bounties have dice next to them on the map to make them easier to spot. [tip]4board_operation_cards_a_item_27621cd9826446d00player_board_91959965 1
EuroGamezFor delivering the first cube to *Brownsville* we got 4 extra points on the income track.5board_operation_cards_a_item_27621cd9826446d00
EuroGamezWe now have *5 points*, 1 for the delivery and 4 from the *bounty*.
Our income is now 7K and we have issued 3 bonds.
How points and income are related can be seen on the *income track*.6player_passenger_lines91959965621cd9826446d00overall_player_board_91959965 1
EuroGamezAfter each player has taken their *3 actions*, income is paid out.
We get money equal to our *income* then pay 1K for each *bond* that we have. So in this case we collect 4K, we add this to any money we already had.7player_passenger_lines91959965621cd9826446d00player_board_91959965 1 player_boards 1
EuroGamezNow let's begin a *new round* and see some other *actions* we can take on our turn!8archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment621cd9826446d00
EuroGamezBut first we'll have another *auction* for turn order.9archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment621cd9826446d00
EuroGamezIn the auction the opponent *passed*, so let us also *pass*.
If all players choose to pass, the *Start Player* marker will move one step clockwise. That means we get to go first this round.1bid_92251866621cd9bb1cf1e10bid_pass 1
EuroGamezAnother way to get points is to complete *Major Lines*. Each map has a set of different *Major Lines* that, if you complete, will award a certain number of *points* on the income track. You can see the *Major Lines* on the bottom left of the map.1majorLinesWrapper621cd9bcc24dd00majorLinesWrapper 1
EuroGamezIf you hover over the box you can see the *Major Lines* outlines with the number of *points* they award.2majorLinesWrapper621cd9bcc24dd00majorLinesWrapper 16
EuroGamezYou can also click the *Show Major Lines* in the menu to the right to see this information outlined on the large map.
Let's try and complete the *Major line* from *San Antonio* to *Veracruz* this round!3majorLinesShow621cd9bcc24dd00
EuroGamezLet's connect *Brownsville* and *Tampico* first.1MEX_26_18_Wrapper621cd9d5a250a00
EuroGamezThe opponent will use their action to upgrade their *Engine*.
The *Engine* is upgraded one step at a time, and the cost is displayed on the action. The costs of each new *Engine* can also be seen by looking at the stack of locomotives.
The cost gradually increases every other level.1board_engine_cards_item_1621cd9e369ac400
EuroGamezOn our turn let's finish the Major line!
Let's build track from *Tampico* to *Veracruz*.1MEX_28_22_Wrapper621cd9eeb1d1c00
EuroGamezGreat we scored *7 points*!
The *Major line* is now marked as ours with a locomotive in the box on the map.
Only the first player to complete a *Major Line* will score the points.1ROTWboard621cd9f8dd46300majorLinesWrapper 1
EuroGamezThe opponent will deliver a *black* cube from *Salina Cruz* to *Veracruz*.1cube_31621cda9a49db200
EuroGamezFor our last action of the round let's *Improve our Engine*.1button_improveEngine621cda9cdb09710generalactions 1
EuroGamezLet's see what the opponent does for their last
*action* of the *round*.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment621cdabc77cf200
EuroGamezThe Opponent built track from *Tampico* to *Mexico City*.
That marks the end of the 2nd round. At the end of each round *income* is paid out again.
And a new *card* is made available. We can see that the new card drawn was *Railroad Executive*.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment621cdaf43924600
EuroGamezIt’s our turn to start the *bidding for turn order*.
Let’s *Pass* as there is nothing we need to do first.2bid_pass621cdaf43924610
EuroGamezSince both players passed the *first player* marker moves back to our opponent.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment621cdb775b06100
EuroGamezOn their turn the opponent upgraded their *engine* again.
Let's look at some of the *actions* we haven't taken yet.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment621cdc923f57100
EuroGamezThese are the available *cards*:
In most games of Railways of the World there will always be a few special cards available at the beginning of the game to help you get some extra points in the early game.2board_operation_cards_a_item_9621cdc923f57100
EuroGamezThe *Speed Record* gives 3 extra points to the first player making a 3-link delivery.
The *Passenger Lines* gives 4 extra points to the first player to deliver cubes of four different colours.
And *Bounties* give extra points for making deliveries to specific cities.3board_operation_cards_a_item_9621cdc923f57100board_operation_cards_a_item_9 1 board_operation_cards_a_item_12 1 board_operation_cards_a_item_14 1 board_operation_cards_a_item_27 1

This will only be displayed here until the *Passenger Lines* card has been claimed.4player_passenger_lines92251866621cdc923f57100
EuroGamezOn the opponent's turn they upgraded their *Engine* again, to level 3 this time.
They are probably going for the *Speed Record*, so let's try and achieve the *Passenger Lines*. 5archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment621cdc923f57100
EuroGamezSo far we have only delivered 1 [blue]Blue Cube[/blue].
Let’s deliver a *yellow cube* to *San Antonio*.6button_deliverGood621cdc923f57110button_deliverGood 1
EuroGamezDeliver the *yellow cube* to *San Antonio*.1cube_59621cdc960b60510
EuroGamezWhen you deliver a good you always need to take the *cube* from a city that you are connected to. But once that good has started moving you can switch to other players' track.
When you use another player's track that player will get the *points* for that part of the delivery.1cube_38621cdcef1541c00
EuroGamezThe opponent is delivering a cube from *Salina Cruz* to *Mexico City*. They are using two of their own links and one link that's ours. So we get *1 point* and they get *2 points* for the delivery.
Then the opponent gets another *3 points* for claiming the *Speed Record*!2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment621cdcef1541c00
EuroGamezLet’s keep working on the *Passenger Lines* objective. We have delivered a [blue]Blue[/blue] and a *Yellow* cube so now we need to deliver a [red]Red[/red], *Black* or *Purple* cube.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment621cdcfbbd43f00
EuroGamezLet’s deliver a *Black* cube from *Brownsville* to *Veracruz*.

EuroGamezThe opponent keeps extending their network...1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment621cddae5d15200

We will use part of the opponent’s track.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment621cddbaea92600
EuroGamezWe will use part of the opponent’s track for this delivery. But it will be worth it to score this before the opponent does!
