You, an *expert merchant,* will trade with nomads, buy goods at oases, and find the best paths through the desert to cities and their bazaars. If you're cunning enough, you may become the wealthiest merchant in Samarkand!

NekonyancerThe *goal* of the game is to use your starting capital of 200 Piaster and, by buying and selling goods at a profit, eventually *reach 500 Piaster.*
*[red]The starred number by your name[/red]* represents your current Piaster.

NekonyancerAt the beginning of the game, each player must *[red]choose a starting location[/red]* on the board.
*- Click here to place your camel.*
*- Click on "Place Pawn" at the top.*1cellboard_2_46276f9679b49a10cellboard_2_4 16
NekonyancerOn your turn, you must *move your camel,* following the arrows from one space to another. You'll then perform an action based on the space you land on.
[blue]You have two movement options:[/blue]
*- Move Pawn* (1 space)
*- Roll Die* (move -1 to 5 spaces)1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment6276f993ad77d00
NekonyancerLet's try the first option of moving one space.
*- Click here to select the next space.*
*- Click on "Move Pawn" at the top.*2cellboard_1_46276f993ad77d10
NekonyancerWe've moved onto an [blue]*oasis.*[/blue]
Oases always give two options:
*- Buy one good for 5 Piaster.*
*- Buy four goods for a variable price.* (This oasis's price is 20 Piaster!)
These goods will be drawn randomly from [red]*the supply bag![/red]*1cellboard_1_46276f99b0178200clothbag 1
Nekonyancer*Click here to buy 4 goods!*2buy46276f99b0178210
NekonyancerGood. We drew four random cubes from the bag, joining the seven that we started the game with.
We're going to want to gather *large sets of individual colors.* You'll see why when we reach a city!1my_card_6_306276f9a06e65900
NekonyancerThere is *no limit* to how many cubes you can hold at once, but it's best not to hoard too many. If the supply bag *runs out of cubes,* all players will have to discard down to 12 cubes. The discarded cubes will then be put into the bag.
[green][tip] The number on the supply bag shows how many cubes remain. Best to keep an eye on it![/green]2clothbag6276f9a06e65900clothbag 3
NekonyancerTime for our next turn.
*- Click here to select the next space.*
*- Click on "Move Pawn" at the top.*1cellboard_1_36276f9c232d0110cellboard_1_3 16
NekonyancerThis space is a *[blue]Nomad camp.[/blue]* Whenever you go to one, you *must* give them a good as a gift, in exchange for their hospitality. It's polite!
[red]!!! If you have no goods to give, you must spend 20 Piaster to buy them one from the supply bag. !!![/red]1cellboard_1_36276f9cccc8b000cellboard_1_3 2
Nekonyancer*- Click on this green cube.* (It's fruit!)
*- Click on "Give Gift" at the top.*2my_card_6_306276f9cccc8b010my_card_6_30 16
Nekonyancer[blue]*Seems like they like their gift!*[/blue]
*[green]The green cube[/green]* went onto one of the open spaces in their camp. This camp happens to have *five* spaces, but other camps can have *four* or *six.*1cellboard_1_36276f9d34fd2a00card_6_3_30 1
NekonyancerAfter giving them a gift, you may *trade goods* with the nomads. Trading is always *one-for-one,* and you may do it as many times as you like.
We're trying to gather big sets of the same goods, so we should pick up those yellows!2cellboard_1_36276f9d34fd2a00
NekonyancerLet's try it!
*1.* Select the *[red]two yellow cubes[/red]* in the nomad camp.
*2.* Select the *[green]green and red cubes[/green]* in your inventory.
*3.* Select *"Trade"* at the top!3cellboard_1_36276f9d34fd2a10my_card_5_23 3 my_card_6_44 3 card_6_1_5 1 card_6_2_15 1
NekonyancerGreat! We already have six yellow cubes! [green]Our big payday is coming![/green]
By the way, if we hadn't opted to trade with the nomads, we would have gotten the option to *advance to the next space instead.* We would have then triggered THAT space's action as well!1cellboard_1_36276f9e65a20000my_card_1_5 3 my_card_2_8 3 my_card_3_9 3 my_card_4_10 3 my_card_5_15 3 my_card_6_16 3
Nekonyancer*Alright!*
From here, note that there are *two arrows* going out from our space. Both of them lead to *cities.*
We can sell our goods at cities, but each city will only buy two kinds of goods!1cellboard_1_26276fa299c46600
NekonyancerThis city will only buy *yellow cubes* (grain) and *red cubes* (copper).2cellboard_2_26276fa299c46600
NekonyancerThis city will only buy *white cubes* (camels) and *sets of cubes where each cube is a different color.*3cellboard_1_16276fa299c46600
NekonyancerSince we have so many yellow cubes, we should go to this city!
*- Select this city.*
*- Click on "Move Pawn" at the top.*4cellboard_2_26276fa299c46610
Nekonyancer*Now we can sell goods!*
When selling goods, we sell *all* our cubes of a single color. We then consult *[blue]this chart*[/blue] to see how much Piaster we get for it.
We have *seven yellow cubes.* According to the chart, we can get *140 Piaster* for the set!1cellboard_2_26276fa32d4a0800helper 2
NekonyancerLet's do it!
*- Select your [green]yellow cubes.*[/green]
*- Click on "Sell Goods" at the top.*2my_card_3_96276fa32d4a0810my_card_1_5 3 my_card_2_8 3 my_card_3_9 3 my_card_4_10 3 my_card_5_13 3 my_card_6_15 3 my_card_7_16 3
Nekonyancer*We're off to a great start!*
After anyone makes a sale, [blue]*this purple disc*[/blue] is placed onto the city to prevent anyone else from selling the same color good.
There's only *one disc* though, so it will keep moving around to block other resources as other sales are made.1cellboard_2_26276fa366f82a00marketchip 2
NekonyancerBy the way, it's *humiliating* for a master merchant like yourself to enter a city with nothing to sell!
[red]If you do, you must pay 20 Piaster to the bank![/red]
Now, pay attention to what your opponent does next...2cellboard_2_26276fa366f82a00
NekonyancerOur opponent moved to [blue]*this nomad camp[/blue]* and gave them a gift. But since he did *not* trade with them afterward, he got to move onward to *[red]this city.[/red]*
He then sold red cubes, so *the purple disc moved* to block anyone else from selling red again. Yellow cubes can now be sold again!1cellboard_1_26276fa566c47200cellboard_1_2 2 cellboard_2_2 1
NekonyancerNext, let's learn about our other movement option. We've just been plodding along, one space at a time. If we want to move quickly, we can *roll the die* instead! It will cost 5 Piaster though!
[green][tip] The faces of the die are 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and negative 1.[/green]2cellboard_2_26276fa566c47200
NekonyancerLet's try it!
*Click on "Roll Die" at the top!*3rolldie6276fa566c47210
NekonyancerWe rolled negative one, so we have to move backward along an arrow. We could move to [blue]*this oasis down here,*[/blue] but let's move to [red]*our old nomad camp instead.*[/red]
[tip] Using the die prevents one from taking an additional move at a nomad camp. I guess they find rushed behavior to be rude or something.
*- Select the nomad camp.*
*- Click on "Move Pawn" at the top.*1cellboard_5_36276fa823c93411cellboard_1_2 1 cellboard_2_3 2
NekonyancerWhen you arrive at a nomad camp and all their goods spaces are full, [blue]something special happens.[/blue] Instead of giving them a gift and trading, you must pay 10 Piasters to take all their goods! [green]*What a bargain![/green]*
Two more cubes will then be drawn from the bag and placed in the camp.
*Click on "Take all the Goods" at the top!*1cellboard_1_26276fa8faeef810
NekonyancerOur opponent just rolled the die, got a *one,* and went onto this nomad camp. He didn't want to trade, but since he moved here by rolling the die, he didn't get the option of moving on to the next space! *Too bad!*1cellboard_2_16276faba2337600
NekonyancerHopefully we'll have better luck with the die.
*Click on "Roll Die" at the top!*2rolldie6276faba2337610
NekonyancerShoot. We got a one too. That means we have to move onto a city. It would be really nice to save [red]*our three white cubes*[/red] for a big set. Unfortunately, if we don't sell something, we'll lose 20 Piaster!
*- Move to the northern city.*1cellboard_5_362771a8f1e90e11my_card_4_58 1 my_card_5_59 1 my_card_6_63 1
NekonyancerAlas, we must sell our white goods. According to the chart, we'll only get 35 Piasters for them. :(
*Sell your white goods.*1my_card_5_5962771abbda4f110my_card_5_59 16
NekonyancerThat's pretty much it!
Here's a *recap* of what we've learned:
Move either 1 space or with the die. Always move along the arrows. Buy goods at *[green]oases.[/green]* Give gifts and trade and *[red]nomad camps.[/red]* Sell sets of goods at *[blue]cities.[/blue]*
When one player reaches 500 Piaster, he will *immediately* win!1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment62771ac14e5bc00
NekonyancerBy the way, this game was designed by *Sid Sackson* way back in *1980!* His work paved the way for many of the modern board games we know and love today.
How well do you think his game holds up by today's standards?2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment62771ac14e5bc00clothbag 3
Nekonyancer[blue]*Thanks for playing through this tutorial!*[/blue]
